Tayyip Erdogan re-elected as President of Turkey

The Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has emerged victorious in the recent election following a tense run-off, according to unofficial data from the state-run Anadolu Agency and the country’s Supreme Election Council.After failing to secure more than 50 percent of votes required for an outright win in the first round held on May 14, Erdogan received 52.14 percent of votes in the second round on Sunday, beating his rival, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who won 47.86 percent.

World Milk Day 2023

World Milk Day, observed every year on 1st June, was created in the year 2001 by Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) to promote the consumption and benefits of milk around the world. The goal of this day is to provide us with a chance to raise awareness of and support in any manner possible initiatives related to the dairy industry.

The theme of World Milk Day 2023 is “Showcasing how dairy is reducing its environmental footprint, while also providing nutritious foods and livelihoods.”

World No Tobacco Day 2023

World No Tobacco Day is an annual event held on May 31, organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) to promote awareness about the detrimental consequences of tobacco usage and advocate for policies aimed at reducing tobacco consumption.

This year the theme for World No Tobacco Day is “We need food, not tobacco”.

India’s first polarimetry mission XPoSat

The Indian Space Research Organisation is collaborating with the Raman Research Institute (RRI), Bengaluru, an autonomous research institute, to build the X-Ray Polarimeter Satellite (XPoSat) that is scheduled to be launched later this year.XPoSat (X-ray Polarimeter Satellite) is India’s first dedicated polarimetry mission to study various dynamics of bright astronomical X-ray sources in extreme conditions. The spacecraft will carry two scientific payloads in a low earth orbit. The primary payload POLIX (Polarimeter Instrument in X-rays) will measure the polarimetry parameters (degree and angle of polarization) in medium X-ray energy range of 8-30 keV photons of astronomical origin. The XSPECT (X-ray Spectroscopy and Timing) payload will give spectroscopic information in the energy range of 0.8-15 keV.

CSK’s captain, Dhoni, received the IPL trophy and subsequently handed it over to Rayudu and Jadeja. Opting to bat first, the Gujarat Titans managed to score 214 for four, with B Sai Sudharsan playing an outstanding innings of 96 runs off 47 balls. However, due to the rain interruption, CSK’s target was adjusted to 171 runs to be chased in 15 overs. Due to heavy rainfall, the final match scheduled for Sunday was postponed to the reserve day, which was Monday. Ultimately, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) emerged victorious over the defending champions, utilizing the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern Method.

PM Narendra Modi inaugurates new Parliament building

Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the new Parliament building. He arrived at Gate No. 1, wearing traditional attire, and was greeted by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Accompanied by priests from Karnataka’s Shringeri Math, the Prime Minister participated in a ceremonial “Ganapati Homam” to seek divine blessings for the inauguration of the new Parliament building. Vedic chants added a spiritual atmosphere to the occasion.The new building is located in the Central Vista area of New Delhi and is designed to accommodate the growing size and needs of the Indian Parliament.The new Parliament building has been designed to accommodate future requirements, with seating for 888 members in the Lok Sabha and 384 members in the Rajya Sabha.

75TH INTERNATIONAL DAY OF UN PEACEKEEPERS

This is the day when in 1948 the first UN peacekeeping mission, “UN Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO)” began operations in Palestine. Each year on this Day, the UN and countries across the globe pay tributes to the professionalism, dedication and courage of all men and women who have served or are serving in UN Peacekeeping Missions and honour the memory of those who have laid down their lives in the cause of peace. This year marks the 75th Anniversary of the UN Peacekeepers Day.

New ₹75 Coin to Mark New Parliament Inauguration

The Ministry of Finance has announced the launch of a special ₹75 coin to commemorate the inauguration of India’s new parliament building.The newly minted ₹75 coin will feature the iconic Lion Capital of the Ashoka Pillar on one side, with the words “Satyamev Jayate” below it. The coin will bear the inscription “Bharat” in Devanagari script on the left side and “India” in English on the right. The circular coin will have a diameter of 44 millimeters and 200 serrations along its edges. It will weigh 35 grams and be composed of a four-part alloy, consisting of 50% silver, 40% copper, 5% nickel, and 5% zinc. The use of silver in the composition adds a precious and commemorative element to the coin.

Meri LiFE Mera Swachh Shehar

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle is an intrinsic part of urban swachhata and the campaign Meri LiFE, Mera Swachh Shehar has transformed into one such historic movement led by citizens. Nearly 13,000 Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (RRR) Centres that have opened nationwide so far, have witnessed more than 17 lakh citizens voluntarily donating their unused goods, old books, clothes, toys, etc. These items will be refurbished and recycled for reuse. For swachhta, citizens are going an extra mile to do whatever it takes to transform it into a jan andolan.

The Union Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Shri Giriraj Singh, recently launched the ‘SAMARTH Campaign on Promoting Digital Transactions in 50,000 Gram Panchayats’ under the AzadiKaAmritMahotsav in Lucknow. This campaign, initiated by the Ministry of Rural Development, aims to promote digital transactions in rural areas, with a particular focus on empowering women.

AI Supercomputer ‘AIRAWAT’

The AI Supercomputer ‘AIRAWAT’, installed at C-DAC, Pune has been ranked 75th in the world. It was declared so in the 61st edition of Top 500 Global Supercomputing List  at the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC 2023) in Germany.It puts India on top of AI Supercomputing nations worldwide. The system is installed under National Program on AI by Government of India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the highest honours of Papua New Guinea and Fiji.Modi hosted a significant summit between India and 14 Pacific island countries to bolster bilateral ties. Governor-General of Papua New Guinea, Sir Bob Dadae, awarded Modi with the Grand Companion of the Order of Logohu (GCL), which is the country’s highest civilian award. Papua New Guinea granted this award to Modi for his outstanding contribution towards promoting the unity of Pacific Island nations and spearheading the cause of the Global South.

Adidas new India cricket team kit sponsor

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that Adidas will be the new kit sponsor of the Indian team. Adidas will replace Kewal Kiran Clothing Ltd, maker of Killer Jeans, which came in as interim sponsor after the then-sponsor Mobile Premier League Sports (MPL Sports) pulled out of the deal midway. Adidas is a German multinational corporation that designs and manufactures athletic shoes, apparel, and equipment. The company is headquartered in Herzogenaurach, Germany, and is the largest sportswear manufacturer in the world. 

PM Modi addressed 76th Session of the ‘World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, addressed the 76th Session of the World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland. He congratulated the World Health Organization (WHO) on serving the world for 75 years and expressed confidence that the WHO would set goals for the next 25 years as it reaches its 100-year milestone. The Prime Minister also emphasized the importance of traditional systems of healthcare such as Yoga, Ayurveda, and meditation, which address physical, mental, and social aspects of health.

National Anti-Terrorism Day 2023

India observes the National Anti-Terrorism Day on May 21 every year. The day is observed to commemorate the death of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated on this day in 1991. The day is also observed to spread awareness about the dangers of terrorism and to reaffirm India’s commitment to combating terrorism.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveils Mahatma Gandhi Bust in Hiroshima

The Mahatma Gandhi bust has been gifted by the Government of India to the city of Hiroshima as a symbol of friendship and goodwill between India and Japan, on the occasion of the visit of the Prime Minister for the G-7 summit .The 42 inches tall bronze bust has been sculpted by Padma Bhushan awardee Shri Ram Vanji Sutar.

Reserve Bank of India withdraws Rs 2,000 notes from Circulation

The ₹2000 denomination banknote was introduced in November 2016. “Clean Note Policy” of the Reserve Bank of India, it has been decided to withdraw the ₹2000 denomination banknotes from circulation. The banknotes in ₹2000 denomination will continue to be legal tender. Exchange of ₹2000 banknotes into banknotes of other denominations can be made up to a limit of ₹20,000/- at a time at any bank starting from May 23, 2023. All banks shall provide deposit and/or exchange facilities for ₹2000 banknotes until September 30, 2023.

Indian author Ruskin Bond wrote a book titled “The Golden Years: The Many Joys of Living a Good Long Life”. The Golden Years book is published by HarperCollins India and released on 19 May 2023, Bond’s 89th birthday. “The Golden Years” focuses on Bond’s experiences during the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Rescheduling of Exam Dates for CUET (UG) - 2023

It was noticed that NTA has allotted 600+ km far exam centres to the CUET (UG) candidates of Jammu & Kashmir. Being sensitive to the needs of candidates and to facilitate the students of Jammu and Kashmir, the NTA is exploring the possibility of creating temporary Centres in Kashmir.
NTA has decided that CUET (UG) – 2023 will now be conducted from 26 May 2023 onwards in the UT of Jammu & Kashmir.
As far as Manipur is concerned the NTA has been advised to keep all examinations in the State of Manipur from 29 May 2023 onwards.
