Celeste Saulo of Argentina has been appointed as the first woman Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Saulo won a landslide victory at the Congress of the United Nations Environment Meteorological Agency in Geneva.She was the director of the National Meteorological Service of Argentina until 2014. She has been elected for four years. This agency plays an important role in coordinating international meteorological work.

Karnataka announces free bus travel ‘Shakti’ scheme for women

The Karnataka government has advised the women to apply for Shakti smart cards to avail the free travel in state run buses, starting from June 11. The government has already issued a set of guidelines on the ‘Shakti’ scheme, which is one of the major poll promises by the Congress party in Karnataka. According to the transport department of Karnataka, women can apply for Shakti smart cards through sevasindhu.karnataka.gov.in from June 11.

Sunil Kumar wins decathlon gold at Asian U20 Athletics Championship

India is placed third in the overall rankings with 12 medals – Three each of gold, silver and bronze. Japan tops the chart with 10 golds and 17 medals overall while China is placed second with 14 medals.India’s Sunil Kumar scored 7003 points and clinched gold in men’s decathlon at the Asian U20 Athletics Championships in Yecheon, South Korea. Apart from Sunil’s heroics, Pooja clinched women’s high jump silver after finishing with a 1.82m jump while Bushra Khan, secured silver in women’s 3000m race. In the women’s 4x100m relay, India secured bronze with a time of 45.36s.

India’s First International Cruise Vessel from Chennai to Sri Lanka

Francis, who has had a nearly 40-year-career, will take the helm of the UN’s main policy-making body, starting in September. He was elected by acclamation during a ceremony in the iconic General Assembly Hall at UN Headquarters in New York. The General Assembly consists of all 193 UN Member States, all of which have an equal vote.

India Defeat Pakistan To Become Hockey Junior Asia Cup Champions

The Indian junior men’s hockey team maintained its continental supremacy by beating arch-rivals Pakistan 2-1 to become Asia Cup champions in Salalah, Oman.
